‘Beloved’ Radio Host and Family Die After Head-On Crash

A Texas community is mourning the loss of a local radio DJ and his family, who were pronounced dead at the scene of a head-on collision in Odessa.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said that Hector Manuel Martinez-Olivas, 46, wife Norma Estela Marquez-Gonzales, 45, and their 14-year-old son were killed in a crash that occurred on the afternoon of April 20 in Ector County, according to KWES-TV and the Midland Reporter-Telegram. The sad news was confirmed by the City of Odessa on social media.

Texas DPS said that two vehicles were involved in the crash, a Chevy truck driven by Martinez-Olivas and a Dodge Ram, according to the outlets.

The driver of the Ram, who was traveling on the wrong side of the road, was pronounced dead after being transported to the Medical Center Hospital, per KWES-TV.

The Texas Department of Public Safety did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Going by the radio moniker DJ Jony, Martinez-Olivas hosted a weekday Spanish-speaking radio show in the afternoons on Q108 FM, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

“He never came in alone, he was always with his wife and their son,” fellow DJ Tania Carmona told KEWS-TV. “He would DJ at events to play and his son would help him bring down the speakers and cables and so would his wife. They were a beautiful example of what it means to be a united family.”

Martinez-Olivas’ brother, Guillermo Martinez, set up a GoFundMe following the tragic deaths for support for funeral services, which has raised over $18,000 as of Friday, April 26.

Funeral services will be held for Martinez-Olivas and his family at th the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Chapel, according to his obituary.

“While Hector’s physical presence may be gone, his legacy of love and kindness will forever endure in the hearts of those who knew him,” his obituary read. “Rest in peace, dear Hector, as you continue your eternal voyage alongside your beloved wife and son. Your light will never fade, and your memory will live on in the countless lives you touched with your boundless love and grace.”

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
