A routine school drop-off turned into a nightmare in Los Angeles on Friday when a 10-year-old girl and her 70-year-old grandfather were stabbed during an alleged carjacking in Sunland.
The attack happened just before 8 a.m. on the 10300 block of Eldora Avenue, where police say the family was getting ready to head to school. According to investigators, the suspect — identified as 28-year-old Eric Avilez — lived next door with relatives and had been causing trouble in the neighborhood in the days leading up to the incident.
First responders treated the victims at the scene before rushing them to a nearby hospital. The young girl was able to go home by noon, but her grandfather suffered serious neck wounds that may have nicked an artery. Police say he remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Neighbors told ABC 7 they weren’t shocked when they learned who the suspect was. One resident described recent behavior from Avilez as “all kinds of crazy stuff,” calling the situation “your worst nightmare as a neighbor.” Avilez’s own brother told the outlet that the suspect “has mental issues.”

After the stabbing, the suspect allegedly jumped into the family’s vehicle and sped off, abandoning it just a few miles away. Officers arrested him around 2 p.m. He has not yet been booked, and charges are pending.
