Actor and Former Boxer Dies in Tragic ‘Barn Fire’

Bobby J. Brown, an actor known for his role on HBO’s The Wire and a former five-time Golden Gloves boxing champion, has died. He was 62.

Brown died on Tuesday, Feb. 24, following a barn fire in Maryland, according to the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. His death was ruled accidental, with officials listing the cause as diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded to the scene after the barn became “nearly fully engulfed” in flames. Authorities said Brown had entered the structure to jump-start a vehicle when the fire broke out. He was later found deceased inside.

In a heartbreaking detail shared by his daughter Reina, Brown had called out for a fire extinguisher as the flames rapidly spread. His wife was also injured in the incident and suffered severe burns while attempting to rescue him.

Before finding success as an actor, Brown built a respected career in boxing. A talented athlete, he won five Golden Gloves championships during his time in the ring — an achievement that reflected both his discipline and competitive spirit.

He later transitioned into acting, where he became best known for his role as a police officer on The Wire, the critically acclaimed HBO drama created by David Simon. The series, which ran from 2002 to 2008, earned widespread praise for its layered portrayal of Baltimore’s law enforcement, political system and community life.

Brown continued collaborating with Simon over the years, appearing in Homicide: Life on the Street and more recently in the 2022 HBO miniseries We Own This City.

Friends and fans are remembering Brown as both tough and warm — a man who brought authenticity to every role he played and dedication to everything he pursued.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.
