Just months after the fairy-tale royal wedding, things behind palace walls were anything but magical.
A new royal biography is shedding light on an explosive confrontation between Prince William and Meghan Markle — and insiders claim it got heated fast.
According to author Russell Myers in his book William and Catherine: The Inside Story, William and Catherine, Princess of Wales invited Meghan and Prince Harry over in July 2018 for what was meant to be “clear-the-air talks.”
Instead, it reportedly turned into what one source described as an “ugly atmosphere.”
The drama allegedly began in the tense lead-up to Harry and Meghan’s May 2018 wedding. Staff were said to be overwhelmed, exhausted, and struggling to keep up with last-minute demands.
“It was a very stressful time,” a source claimed. “Tensions were high. People were running on empty.”
William reportedly noticed morale sinking — and even apologized to staff on behalf of his brother more than once.
Insiders allege that the relaxed and positive work culture William and Kate had built at Kensington Palace was “utterly extinguished” in a matter of months.
“People were leaving all the time; it was horrendous,” one insider claimed.
According to sources quoted in the book, palace staff felt caught in two very different camps.
On one side were William and Kate, described as hands-on and mindful of creating a healthy workplace. On the other, insiders allege, were constant complaints and shifting expectations from Harry and Meghan.
“Nothing was ever good enough,” one source claimed. “It was exhausting.”
The breaking point reportedly came when two of Meghan’s personal assistants left their roles, fueling whispers of deeper tension inside the household.
By the summer of 2018, William and Kate allegedly decided it was time to address the situation directly.
The couples met privately at William and Kate’s home. But instead of reconciliation, sparks reportedly flew.
Myers claims William accused Meghan of being “difficult and rude” — and, according to Harry’s account, even pointed directly at her during the confrontation.
“Harry and Meghan were unwilling to concede they were responsible,” the author wrote, referring to staff departures and reports that some employees felt “sick with stress.”
“The whole atmosphere was ugly,” a source said of the fallout.
At the time, the public had no idea about the alleged tension. But by October 2018, Kensington Palace press secretary Jason Knauf reportedly sent an email outlining concerns about Meghan’s treatment of staff.
The claims — which included allegations that she had “undermined” a staffer’s confidence — did not become public until 2021, after Harry and Meghan had stepped down as senior working royals and relocated to California.
The allegations surfaced just days before the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey aired, adding even more fuel to the royal firestorm.
Meghan later said she was “saddened” by the report and described it as the “latest attack” on her character.
Even after their royal exit, staff turnover has continued to follow the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Reports surfaced in late 2025 that the couple had parted ways with their 11th publicist in five years — reigniting questions about what’s really happening behind the scenes.
While no one from the Sussex camp has publicly addressed the latest claims in this new biography, one thing is clear: the rift between the brothers that once shocked the world may have started much earlier — and run much deeper — than anyone realized.
