A Sunday soccer game in central Mexico turned into a scene of horror when gunmen opened fire at the end of a match, killing at least 11 people and injuring 12 others, according to authorities.
The shooting happened in the city of Salamanca, where the attackers reportedly arrived just as the game was wrapping up. Ten people died at the scene, while another victim later succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.
Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto confirmed that a woman and a minor were among those wounded. In a public statement, he described the massacre as part of a growing “crime wave” gripping the city and issued a direct plea for federal intervention.
Prieto called on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to step in as violence continues to plague the region.
State officials said the Guanajuato prosecutor’s office is investigating the attack and working alongside federal authorities to increase security in the area. Guanajuato has been one of Mexico’s deadliest states in recent years, recording the highest number of homicides nationwide last year.
The bloodshed comes amid an ongoing turf war between local criminal groups, including the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
“Unfortunately, there are criminal groups trying to subjugate authorities,” Prieto said, adding that they would not succeed.
While Mexico’s government recently reported that the country’s 2025 murder rate dropped to its lowest level since 2016, analysts warn that official statistics may not fully capture the scale of violence still affecting many communities — especially in hotspots like Guanajuato.
