Woman Chokes on French Fry and Crashes into Gas Station and Triggering Collapse

A split-second choking scare turned into a jaw-dropping accident when a woman reportedly passed out behind the wheel after choking on a french fry — then slammed her car into a gas station, causing part of the building to collapse.

The shocking incident happened just after noon on January 11 in Wilmington, according to police reports cited by local media. Authorities say the woman was driving when she began choking on the fast-food item and lost consciousness while the car was still moving.

With no one controlling the vehicle, her 2016 Buick LeSabre first smashed into a parked car before plowing into a support pole at a Sunoco gas station. The violent impact caused part of the station’s awning to collapse, stunning witnesses nearby.

An eyewitness told reporters the car hit a pole holding up the awning, leading to visible structural damage and an immediate shutdown of the gas station.

Despite the terrifying chain of events, no injuries were reported — a near miracle given the collapse and multiple vehicles involved.

Police say the woman told officers she doesn’t remember the crash at all. She reportedly explained that she has a chronic dry spot in her throat that can cause sudden choking episodes, according to the crash report.

The driver was cited for failure to control her vehicle. No criminal charges have been announced.

After the crash, firefighters called in a building inspector to assess the damage, and the gas station has been closed indefinitely while officials determine whether it’s safe to reopen.

What began as a quick bite on the road ended with twisted metal, a damaged building, and a reminder that even the smallest distraction can spiral into disaster.
