A terrifying scene unfolded in northern England after a teenage girl somehow fell out of the back of a moving ambulance during rush hour. The incident shut down a major motorway link and left drivers stuck for nearly two hours.
The fall happened Tuesday evening on the slip road that connects the M6 to the M55 near Lancashire. Traffic instantly ground to a halt. Witnesses reported seeing emergency crews swarm the roadway after the girl suddenly appeared on the pavement behind the ambulance.
Police say they still don’t know exactly how she ended up outside the vehicle.
“It was one of the strangest calls we’ve taken,” a Lancashire Police officer told reporters. “A passenger falling from the back of an ambulance is not something we see every day.”
Officials said the girl was already being transported to a hospital for an unrelated medical issue. Against all odds, she survived the fall with no serious injuries.
“She’s extremely lucky,” the officer added. “At that speed and at that time of day, this could have been a fatal collision.”
The North West Ambulance Service confirmed the girl “exited the vehicle while it was moving.” Paramedics immediately stopped and treated her on the road until she could be transported safely.
One paramedic described the moment privately as “a shock no one on the crew saw coming.”
In a statement, the ambulance service said, “Thankfully, no one else was injured. We are reviewing the incident and working closely with police.”
Traffic cameras showed long lines of cars trapped near Junction 32 as emergency workers shut down the road to search for debris, treat the patient, and secure the ambulance.
Motorists were told to seek alternate routes, but many were stuck in place.
“It was just sirens and brake lights for miles,” said a driver who passed the scene shortly after the girl was rescued. “No one had any idea what happened until news started trickling out.”
Police reopened the motorway later in the evening after confirming the teen had been safely transported and the roadway cleared.
The circumstances surrounding how the ambulance door opened — or how the patient managed to fall from it — remain under investigation.
“Right now, nothing is ruled out,” a police spokesperson said. “Our priority is determining what led to this dangerous situation.”
