A West Virginia community is heartbroken after a beloved pastor was killed in a tragic accident at home on New Year’s Day.
Pastor Sam Pierson, 44, of South Charleston Grace Church, died while working on his pickup truck at his home in Hurricane, West Virginia. According to local officials, the vehicle fell on him, trapping the father of two underneath.
“He was one of the kindest, most devoted men I knew,” said South Charleston Mayor Scott Edwards. Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 5 p.m., but it was too late.
The devastating news was confirmed by the West Virginia South District Church of the Nazarene. Superintendent Rev. Bret Layton shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, saying, “His sudden passing has deeply shaken all who knew and loved him.”
Pastor Pierson leaves behind his wife Erin and their two teenage daughters, Layla and Alex.
Pierson was known for his warm smile, friendly spirit, and unwavering faith. Tributes have poured in across social media, with church members and fellow pastors sharing stories of how he inspired and supported them.
One of the most touching messages came from Abraham Williams, pastor of Fishcreek Nazarene Church in Ohio. “He was an incredible husband, father, pastor, and friend,” Williams wrote. “His faith and heart for people left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.”
Pierson had been leading South Charleston Grace Church since 2018. He also ran a property repair business, ProFix LLC, and earned his ministry degree from Nazarene Bible College in Colorado.
His final Facebook post, shared just before Christmas Eve, revealed how deeply spiritual he was:
“Christmas Eve is one of my favorite moments of the year. It’s quiet, meaningful, and deeply personal. A time to slow down, worship together, and remember the incredible gift of Christ… who promises to walk with us as we place our hope and faith in Him.”
Church leaders have asked for continued prayers for the Pierson family as they grieve this unimaginable loss. Memorial arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
“Thank you for standing together as a district family,” Rev. Layton wrote. “We grieve deeply, but not without hope.”
