Tourist Dies After Having ‘Panic Attack’ While Scuba Diving

An Australian tourist’s dream dive in Bali ended in tragedy after a sudden underwater emergency claimed his life just weeks before his birthday.

Nathan John Scott, 40, was scuba diving near Segara Beach in Tulamben on Tuesday, Dec. 30, when the fatal incident unfolded. Scott, who was set to turn 41 in the coming weeks, was exploring the waters off Bali when witnesses say he suddenly panicked beneath the surface.

According to reports from Sky News Australia and news.com.au, a diver from South Africa told authorities that Scott appeared distressed at a depth of roughly 49 feet. He was reportedly nearly a mile offshore at the time.

Witnesses said Scott then removed his diving regulator and swam rapidly toward the surface, a dangerous move that can prove deadly during a dive. He was reportedly accompanied by two instructors, one of whom immediately called for help.

A nearby fisherman told authorities that when he reached the scene by boat, Scott’s body was already floating in the water. The fisherman, along with the South African diver and others, pulled Scott aboard and rushed him back to shore as emergency services were alerted.

Scott was transported to a medical facility, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead.

Kubu Police chief I Nyoman Sukarma said investigators believe panic played a critical role in the tragedy. “Based on witnesses, the victim had a panic attack while diving and suddenly removed his diving regulator,” he told the Daily Mail.

The Australian Consulate in Bali confirmed Scott’s death in a statement to news.com.au, saying the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to his family.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.

Authorities in Indonesia are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as Scott’s family mourns a devastating loss during what was meant to be a memorable holiday.
