In a jaw-dropping revelation, Princess Diana’s former bodyguard has claimed the late royal once jumped off a balcony in a desperate moment during her doomed marriage to King Charles — saying she was “distraught” and determined to escape royal life at any cost.
Ken Wharfe, Diana’s trusted protection officer for six years, shared the chilling story in Channel 5’s new documentary Diana: The Princess and the Bodyguard. He says the shocking incident happened in 1993 — just months after Diana’s separation from Charles — while they were on a ski trip in Lech, Austria.
“When I went to check on her that morning, I noticed something strange in the snow below her suite,” Wharfe recalled. “There was a human-shaped impression. That’s when I realized — she must have jumped. She’d gone over the balcony, about 20 feet down.”
Wharfe said he was frozen with disbelief. “She could have been killed,” he said. “It wasn’t a cry for help — it was as if she had truly decided she wanted out, no matter what it took.”
When confronted, Diana appeared eerily calm. “I asked, ‘What on earth did you think you were doing?’” he recalled. “She smiled and said, ‘I just needed some air. I didn’t want to make a fuss. I just decided I wanted out.’”
Wharfe said that moment broke him. “I’d seen her at her lowest before, but this was different — this was terrifying,” he admitted. “I knew I couldn’t protect her from herself anymore.” He resigned from his post the very next day.
The bodyguard reflected that Diana’s emotional unraveling began long before her death. “When she told the world her marriage was over, she was utterly shattered,” he said. “But deep down, I think this was what she wanted — freedom, even if it destroyed her.”
Just four years later, Diana’s life ended in a Paris car crash that sent shockwaves across the globe — a tragedy Wharfe says he feared was inevitable. “When she gave up her security,” he said, “I knew, in my heart, she wouldn’t survive it.”
