Olympic Hopeful Found Dead at 27

In heartbreaking news from Italy, Norwegian Olympic biathlon star Sivert Guttorm Bakken has died suddenly at just 27 years old.

The rising athlete, who had been training in the Alpine town of Lavaze ahead of a highly anticipated Olympic comeback, was found dead in his hotel room, according to Norwegian outlet NRK.

Bakken, a reigning European champion in the 10km sprint and multiple relays, had been open about his health struggles. He was diagnosed with myocarditis — a serious heart inflammation — in 2022 and stepped away from competition for recovery.

After months of rehabilitation, he was preparing to make his triumphant return to the sport in time for the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

“The IBU is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news,” said International Biathlon Union president Olle Dahlin. “Sivert’s comeback was a source of immense joy and an inspiring demonstration of resilience. His passing at such a young age is impossible to comprehend.”

Bakken’s short but remarkable career included four World Cup victories and a season-long title in the mass start discipline during 2021–2022.

Fans and fellow athletes have flooded social media with tributes to the Norwegian star — a young athlete remembered not only for his talent but for his determination to fight his way back to the world stage.
