‘Matrix’ Star Martin Grelis Dead at 57

Heartbreak has swept across Australia’s entertainment world following the death of actor Martin Grelis, best known for his role alongside Keanu Reeves in The Matrix. He was 57.

Grelis’ passing was confirmed Tuesday by his talent agency, Sophie Jermyn Management, which shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. “Martin was a bright spark who lit up every room he was in — a talented actor, a kind person and a wonderful soul,” the agency wrote. “Gone far too soon.”

With a career spanning nearly three decades, Grelis made his mark in both film and television. After his breakout moment in The Matrix, he went on to star in All SaintsWater Rats, and the acclaimed mini-series Schapelle, where he played a detective investigating the real-life case of drug smuggler Schapelle Corby. He also appeared in Mabo and most recently in 2025’s Alpha King alongside Last King of the Cross actress Mia Pimentel.

Fans and colleagues flooded social media with tributes, remembering Grelis for his warmth and professionalism. “Martin was the most lovely man,” one fan wrote. “Sending condolences and love to all who knew him.”

The news has also rekindled memories of The Matrix’s Aussie connections — including Home and Away star Ada Nicodemou, who appeared in the film as Dujour. Fans recently revisited her cameo, with one nostalgic comment reading, “To see Ada in that movie was a blast. I grew up thinking she was the most beautiful lady in the world.”

From the streets of Water Rats to the world of The Matrix, Grelis’ legacy as one of Australia’s most versatile character actors will not be forgotten.
