Prince William Told Camilla She’s ‘Not a Step-Grandmother’ to George, Charlotte and Louis

Prince William has told Camilla she is not a step-grandmother to his children George, Charlotte and Louis, according to a royal expert who wrote a biography on King Charles’s wife.

Angela Levin, author of the book ‘Camilla: From Outcast to Queen Consort’, said: “William has made it clear that Camilla is the wife of his father, but not a step-grandmother to his children”.

Her book also said that the trio have “two grandfathers but only one grandmother”.

Levin analyzed the way Camilla approached her new relationship with William and Harry – just 23 and 20 respectively at the time – when she became Charles’s wife in 2005.

She explained that Camilla was more of a “friendly grown up they saw occasionally at royal gatherings”, rather than a step-mother – “she tried to be encouraging rather than influential”.

Circumstances were certainly not on her side – the boys’ mother, Diana, had tragically died, and her and Charles had long been conducting an affair. As a result, the public wasn’t impressed.

In Tina Brown’s ‘The Palace Papers’, she explains how William and Harry simply “tolerated” Camilla, but never warmed to her.

Similarly, Camilla hasn’t tried to “take over any responsibility as a step-grandmother to the Cambridges’ children”.

A key reason for this lack of intervention is the fact that Catherine Middleton’s parents are “so close”.

Unlike last time round though, it’s unclear whether a healthy dose of PR is still needed. Camilla and Charles sought help from PR Executive Mark Bolland around the time of their marriage, with stories soon coming out that Harry and Will were “warming” to Camilla.

She added: “In his early thirties, Harry was still complaining bitterly to friends that Camilla had converted his old bedroom at Highgrove, Charles’s Gloucestershire estate, into an elaborate dressing room for herself.”

Another royal expert, Penny Junor, explains that she thinks “the relationship between them all is warm now”, although it “wasn’t then”.

She added: “To be fair to Camilla, she never tried to be mummy but she was the ‘other woman’ and she was there and taking daddy’s time.”
