Human remains discovered Friday in three suitcases in and near the Intracoastal Way in Delray Beach are those of a middle-aged white or Hispanic woman, police say.
The woman had brown hair, was approximately 5-foot-4, and may have had tattooed eyebrows, said police. She was wearing a floral tank top with a black undershirt and black mid-thigh shorts.
Police opened a homicide investigation after finding the woman’s remains in three suitcases in and near the Intracoastal Waterway on Friday afternoon.
They said they found the first suitcase after responding to a call shortly after 4 p.m. reporting a suspicious item in the water near the 1000 block of Palm Trail in Delray Beach.
After discovering remains in the first suitcase, they found two more suitcases, also containing human remains, along the Intracoastal near Southeast Seventh Avenue and Casuarina Trail.
On Saturday, a diver, two assistants and two boats from the Delray Beach Police were at the scene near the George Bush Boulevard Bridge, which was temporarily closed during the morning while a search continued along the waterway’s rocks and mangroves.
The woman’s remains were taken to the medical examiner’s office.
Police ask anyone with information to call Detective Mike Liberta at 561-243-7874.
