Original Article – Hillary Clinton has warned Joe Biden that voters are right to be concerned about his age amid ongoing doubts over whether he is fit for office.
The ex-Secretary of State said that the 80-year-old’s advancing years ‘is an issue’ in the 2024 election at a conference organized by The Financial Times.
She had been asked at a Financial Times summit in Washington, D.C., about Biden stumbling at the G7 Summit in Japan.
‘His age is an issue, and people have every right to consider it,’ Clinton said. ‘It’s a concern for anyone.’
The 75-year-old added: ‘We’ve had presidents who had fallen before who were a lot younger, and people didn’t go into heart palpitations.’
Clinton, who lost to Donald Trump in 2016, claimed that Joe Biden ‘doesn’t get the credit yet’ for ‘jobs and growth.’
‘I obviously hope he stays very focused and able to compete in the election because I think he can be reelected, and that’s what we should all hope for,’ she told the audience.
Her comments are in stark contrast to fellow Democrats, who have dismissed concerns about the commander-in-chief’s age.
Biden is the oldest president in American history and would be 86 at the end of his second term if he wins in 2024.
White House aides have repeatedly downplayed concerns about Biden’s mental and physical fitness.
But late last month, the president was handed answer cards to help him navigate vetted questions from journalists at a highly stage-managed press conference.
Biden shrugged off a question about his advanced years at the event alongside South Korean President Yoon Sun Yeol.
‘With regard to age, I can’t even say — I guess how old I am, I can’t even say the number, it doesn’t register with me,’ he said. He added he expected voters ‘to take a hard look at it, I would as well. I looked at it before I decided to run.’
Ex-South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has called for mental health fitness tests for anyone over the age of 75 in a move seen as a thinly-veiled swipe at Biden and Donald Trump.
But Trump himself offered his support, saying that you needed ‘great mental acuity and physical stamina’ to do the job of president.
Republicans have long criticized Biden for his many verbal gaffes, and have called on him to take a cognitive examination.
Biden got a clean bill of health in February after his annual physical, but his doctor didn’t say whether he examined the president’s mental acuity.
Next year, he will be on full public display as the campaign ramps up ahead of next year’s vote.
During the 2020 election, he campaigned mainly online and rarely left Delaware at the height of the Covid pandemic.
