Documents found on the late Princess Diana’s desk on the day of her untimely death could possibly reveal some plans she had for her children Prince Harry and William.
Diana had considered moving to North America after her divorce from Prince Charles, as she was in the process of purchasing a home in Malibu, California, US.
It is reported that she intended to take William and Harry there for several weeks each year, with an aim to expose them to a different culture and provide them with a unique perspective on life.
Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, confirmed her plans during an episode of Loose Women in November 2019.
The butler explained: “Diana was also deciding to spend some of her time in America.”
“In fact, the day she died, on her desk were plans of a home in Malibu in California, which she was in the process of purchasing.”
He added: “She was going to take William and Harry for three, four weeks every year to America to give them a different culture, to give them a different insight into life.”
It’s possible that Diana saw the United States as a place where her sons could experience new things, learn different perspectives and broaden their horizons.
It’s also possible that she wanted to create a more private space for her family to spend time together away from the intense media scrutiny they faced in the UK.
Harry, the son of the late Princess Diana, recently purchased a home in Santa Barbara, which is approximately an hour away from Malibu.
This move to North America may have been influenced by his mother’s interest in the US.
Prince Harry moved to the US with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their son Archie in March 2020, after stepping down as senior member of the Royal Family.
They initially lived in Los Angeles and then moved to Montecito, a neighbourhood in Santa Barbara, California.
A representative for the couple requested privacy, saying “They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbors, as well as for them as a family.”
Meghan and Harry’s decision to purchase a home in Santa Barbara appears to have a connection to Diana’s interest in the area, but they have requested privacy and respect for their new community.
The couple said at the time they wanted to have more financial independence and the ability to pursue their own charitable and business ventures.
Meghan Markle, who is from the US and has many friends and connections there, potentially saw fulfilling her late mother-in-law’s dream as an appealing option for their new beginning.
